Definition

An output is the immediate product, service or work result produced by an activity. Examples include a released service, a trained team or an implemented capability. Outputs are usually more directly controllable by a team than outcomes, but they do not on their own demonstrate value or a desired change.

When to use

Use the term when deliverables, completion and direct work results need to be named clearly and separated from downstream effects.

Common pitfalls

A high volume of output is treated as evidence of value, productivity or strategic success. This can lead teams to produce more while use, quality or impact remains unchanged.
